Acitivity Base & Topic Discussion
Our curriculum for kindergarten/nursery is activity-based and we emphasize on topic discussion. Teachers carefully plan and design topics of discussion according to children's life experiences, so as to enhance children’s motivation to learn. This approach also strengthens children’s learning and construction of knowledge of the topics.
Balanced Curriculum Achieving Whole-person Development
In our daily activities, children are engaged in various learning activities that foster their whole-personal growth in all areas of development, including language & cognitive, physical, mathematics, artistic, social, science and emotion. Language activity, arts activity, music activity and role play activity are intermixed. Children are encouraged to be creative and curious and to learn by inquiring and exploration. Gross motor (physical play) activity is also part of their daily activity as it helps strengthen children’s big muscles. Children become better coordinated in their physical movements. It also helps their building of social skills with other children and solving conflicts when it arises.
Field trips are organized in accordance with learning topics as part of children’s active learning activities. These trips can enrich children’s life experiences and understanding of topics. At the same time, field trips expand children’s learning from classrooms to real life environment. Children are guided and encouraged to inquire, explore and express throughout the learning process.
Children-directed Learning Projects
Children-directed Learning Projects are included in the curriculum in order to enhance children’s motivation and active participation in the learning process. Children are required to choose their own topic of interest and are free to explore the selected topic. Other than acquiring
knowledge, children also learn to cooperate and admire each other’s work.
Native English and Putonghua Teaching
We are proud to have a professional team of native language teachers. All our teachers teaching English and Putonghua classes are native speakers. Children are exposed to listening, reading, speaking and writing to native teachers day by day, which greatly facilitate their acquisition of English and Putonghua proficiency.
Children in early years have great potentials in language development and acquisition. With a pleasant and stimulating bilingual learning environment aided with multicultural setting, children are able to learn and master two languages in parallel.
To foster children’s learning in languages, we have set the following targets for children to achieve in different ages so that we can facilitate their building of strong bilingual foundation progressively.
2-3 Children are able to communicate well in Cantonese (speaking).
3-4 Children are able understand English instruction and respond with simple English sentences and words.
4-5 Children are able to communicate well in Cantonese, English and Putonghua as well as to read Chinese and English story books.
5-6 Children are able to write in Chinese and English to express themselves.
For international class, the objective is to develop children’s English language as their native language. Since English is not the first language for most of the children in the international class, it is very important that children get most assistance and support at home to make English their native language. By the time children enter International Primary schools, they are expected to communicate in English properly. Three hours in the Kindergarten is not enough to achieve this goal for non native English speaking children. If children do not get the necessary support from home, they are advised to switch to the bilingual class.
